The list of measures to support the decarbonisation of the construction sector has been published

The consortium of the BUILD UP Skills ‘Construye 2030’ project, co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE programme and coordinated by Fundación Laboral de la Construcción, has published a Training Roadmap with priority measures aimed at making certain professions in the sector capable of achieving Europe’s sustainable objectives.

The document, in line with the Pact for Skills in Construction signed by the European sectoral social partners in 2022, focuses on three main areas:

  • Increasing the number of skilled professionals.
  • Making the sector more attractive for women and young people.
  • And (re)qualifying professionals coming from highly polluting industries, such as mining.

Necessary measures for sustainable construction

For the elaboration of the Roadmap, the partners of the ‘Construye 2030’ project have carried out a bibliographical review, working groups and reports, which have allowed them to analyse the barriers that hinder the increase in the number of trained professionals, identified in the ‘Study on the current scenario of the construction sector’.

In addition, they have set up several working groups with different sectoral and training agents to define the necessary measures for the sector to achieve these climate objectives, which were subsequently prioritised, validated and included in the document. The result was the Construye 2030 Roadmap, which includes the proposed measures, grouped into:

  • Training measures, which address the need to update training in accordance with the new sustainability requirements for university and non-university profiles, such as the analysis of the life cycle of buildings, the Energy Certificate of the building or urban regeneration, among others.
  • Measures to support training and employment systems, such as improving coordination between training centres, companies and public administration. It also highlights the importance of applying new teaching methodologies, developing resources for employment counsellors or the creation of advisory and support services for companies.
  • Measures to attract the sector to respond to the need for generational change by incorporating skilled labour, such as incentives for recruitment or the launch of dissemination campaigns on the attractiveness of the sector, especially aimed at women, young people and professionals from other sectors.
